Tahereh Mafi

This book. Omg. I struggled a little writing this post because I’m still new to this and wanted to format all my posts the same. Then I realized, why should I? Not all books are the same. I, as a person, don’t fit into any little box perfectly so why should I try to force my writing into fitting some imaginary protocol? So maybe that was a little unnecessarily deep for a blog post, but still. (Hang on, the review is coming…can you tell I’ve been stressed?) This book was too good to sit and try to come up with a list of things I didn’t like. I hate reading reviews on Amazon because they can turn you off a book before you even give it a chance! I also realized I don’t hate many books, so I may be overly generous with most of my reviews but here we go…

This was AMAZING. I loved it from the very first page. Let me give you some insight into my first 100 pages (Nothing too strong spoiler wise since we meet a few characters in the beginning):

Wow, this imagery is potent.

Oh the chemistry *heart eyes*

OH THE BETRAYAL (maybe?)

Don’t be nice now, butthead.

Reminding myself – I don’t like killers, I don’t like killers, stop it, you don’t like killers

STOP I DONT WANT TO LIKE YOU

IS HE A…. PLEASE DON’T BE A….

As you can tell, I spent a good portion of this book with my internal monologue screaming in response to everything happening.

The writing is so creative and unlike anything I’ve read for a while. Fair warning, read the “Dear Reader” message at the beginning of the book, or it won’t make sense. I also love that because the heroine has been educated primarily through books, most of the book consists of metaphors. It adds credibility to her history. She has been kept in the dark so long, you kind of learn about the new world as she does. So as a brief run down of Shatter me, Juliette has lived her whole life thinking she is a monster and with others thinking she’s an abomination. She is the secret weapon the Reestablishment needs to complete their world domination plans. What happens when she finally finds the strength to fight back?

The more I read, the more I loved this dystopian adventure. The heroine is so human, meaning you see her flaws, you read her inner dialogue, and her pain is tangible. You’re there when she finds the symbol of hope she’s needed and when her “monster” moments are revealed. She’s so juvenile when you first meet her and all she needs is one little push to become the queen she has all the potential to be. Let me just tell you, page 116…. TOTAL CHILLS. For like 20 minutes. My favorite part of the book without a doubt. These characters are pretty dimensional, especially Warner. The love story aspect is a little shaky to me, but I was rooting for the couple the whole time and I can’t wait to see where it goes in future books.

If you’re an avid reader, you’ll know what I mean when I say I was desperate to get to the end of the book. Your eyes can’t devour the pages fast enough. When I got to the end, I was shaking (partially from the giant coffee, partially from this incredible book). Totally recommend 10,000,000%!!

WARNING: Don’t get too excited and look up the synopses of the rest of the series (like I did) because you will find information that you don’t want to know yet and it will leave you shaken.

What I’m drinking:

Dunkin had 4x points on any drink today so I have a lovely iced coffee with Butter Pecan swirl, cream, and sugar. Currently obsessed with the butter pecan flavor!
